Four SRC scholars earned a gold, a silver and two bronze medals as they represented the Philippines in the 9th ASEAN+3 Center for the Gifted in Science (ACGS) Student Camp. The event highlighted the theme, Hidden Science in the Traditional Culture and Heritage, held at South Korea last January 5 to 12, 2018.

The eight-day camp was composed of lectures promoting the science behind South Korea’s culture. It encouraged the students from ten participating countries to seek for the hidden science behind the wonders in their individual homes.

Showcasing how Korea was able to become as they are through the genius of their ancestors in terms of basic commodities such as house structure, food preparations and many more was emphasized in the camp lectures.

The participants were also toured around to learn about Korea and their culture through a visit to the National museum and to know the history of one of the major companies in Korea by stopping over at the Samsung Innovation Museum.

The presence of science wizards from different origins called for various contests within the camp. One was the poster-presentation contest with two themes: Science in Cultural Housing and Architecture and, Science in Heritage.

The team 1 from SRC with Mark Ayalde, Rebekah Hormigos, Rhoanne Bermudo and Jonyle Suriaga, and team 2 from CRC with Danielle Ajoc, Shanti Tomaneng and Jason Villanueva of the Philippines presented their posters entitled 3D Carving and Innovated Bahay Kubo respectively.

“We competed against all the participating countries with the aim of showing the world that Philippines has these things to be proud of,” says Bermudo from team SRC.

The participating students ranged from grades seven to ten were team up with different nationalities to form nine teams. And on the final day of the camp, they presented their assimilated ideas in line with the theme.

“I have to say that it was very fun to work with such enthusiastic people. Throughout the camp, everyone was so dedicated and hard working. this group of people is what you can truly call a team,” says Hormigos, a gold medalist.

Team Philippines gained a gold, a silver, and five bronze medals with the following research topics: Multipurpose Face Mask, Next Level of Security, New Paper Source, Oriental Medicine, Moringa Filter, and Ceramics’ Antibacterial Property respectively.

Every year, the Philippine Science High School System selects representatives for the annual student camp. This year, PSHS-SRC and PSHS-CRC were selected to form two Philippine teams. This camp is a stepping stone for the most prestigious science competition in the region, the ASEAN plus China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan (Republic of China), and Sweden Junior Science Odyssey (APT JSO).
